Treatment for spider and reticular veins is done by Sclerotherapy. This technique involves injecting the veins with a chemical that causes the blood vessel to close up and eventually disappear. Compression stockings are worn for a few days after treatments.
There are 3 types of Sclerotherapy:
- Visually Guided Sclerotherapy - Injecting the very superficial veins that can be seen easily with the naked eye.
- Translumination Sclerotherapy - With the help of a special light, deeper reticular veins can be seen and injected.
- Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy - For deeper veins not seen except with the use of an ultrasound machine or veins that are too curvy to treat with EVLT.
